Buying whole and half animals can be very confusing. Let us show you an example of what you should expect, and do some of the math.
Beef Breakdowns Price: $1.50 live weight grain or grass finished Dexter or Angus + processing ($35.00 + $0.36/lb)
Angus steer, grained: 1300lbs x $1.50= $1950 +processing (806lbs) $35+ (806 x $0.36)= $325 Total price = $2275 That’s 650lbs of beef at $3.50/lb
Angus steer, no grain: 1200lbs x $1.50= $1800 +processing (744lbs) $35+ (744 x $0.36)= $303 Total price = $2103 That’s 600lbs of beef at $3.51/lb
The 1200# grass steer should give* 42 pounds of Chuck Roast 18 pounds of Arm roast 32 ¾” Rib Steaks 32 short ribs 16 pkg of soup bones 24 pounds of rump roast 12 pounds of Sirloin top Roast 16 ¾” round steaks 32 ¾” T-bone Steaks 16 ¾” sirloin Steaks 4 pkg of Swiss steak 200 pounds of Ground beef. *adapted from a local butcher
Dexter steer, grass or grain finished: 700lbs x $1.50= $1050 +processing (420lbs) $35+ (420 x $0.36)= $186 Total price = $1236 That’s 350lbs of beef at $3.53/lb
